I made this image in Coorg, in October 2014. The monsoons were long gone, but that had little impact on the greens or the abundance of life in the lush evergreen forests of the Western Ghats. This snail, Indrella ampulla, is a large, terrestrial snail endemic to the Western Ghats, which means that it isn’t found anywhere else in the world.

While I was tempted to make a close up of this beautiful snail that highlights all its textures and colours, I chose a frame that shows its home. To me, this snail represents the diversity and uniqueness of life the Western Ghats supports, and I felt showing it with its habitat would be a more complete representation of the snail itself.
