We all see butterflies fluttering around us every day – sparkles of nature adding colour and joy to our environment and our minds. The Youth Forum for Nature, College of Forestry, Sirsi, has published an e-book enabling us to have a sneak peek into the amazing world of butterflies. This e-book can be regarded as a handy field-guide for the tech-savvy new generation, who need access to information at their fingertips.
It has information about 176 species of butterflies observed and recorded in and around College of Forestry, Sirsi, Karnataka. Among the flying jewels depicted in this book, 18 are endemic to the Western Ghats. The book covers all 6 families of butterflies, in which the Nymphalidae family tops with 56 species, followed by Lycaenidae (52), Hesperiidae (36), Papilionidae(16), Pieridae (15) and Riodinidae (1).
The species are pictorially depicted through photographs: a majority of them with images of both upper and lower wing surfaces. Prepared as a work of passion, this book also encompasses interesting information on various behavioural facts of butterflies, about implementing butterfly gardening as a conservation tool, and details about various host plants. The authors have also added some tips for mobile photography of butterflies, which requires immense patience and skill.
